BOARD OF IMMIGRATION APPEALS DENIES STAY OF REMOVAL FOR RUSSIAN ACTIVIST
Russian Anti-War Activist Vladislav Krasnov Faces Imminent Deportation After U.S. Appeals Board Denies Emergency Stay
Los Angeles, California – March 4, 2026 — A Russian political activist who publicly opposed President Vladimir Putin and supported the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny now faces imminent deportation from the United States after the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) denied an emergency request to halt his removal.
The BIA issued its decision on March 4, 2026, denying a request for a stay of removal for Vladislav Krasnov, despite a pending Motion to Reopen his asylum case based on new evidence and changed circumstances. The decision clears the way for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deport Krasnov to Russia at any time.
Krasnov, who has openly criticized the Russian government and supported the pro-democracy movement led by Navalny, argues that he faces severe persecution if returned to Russia. His legal team maintains that his case has become significantly more dangerous since his original asylum hearing.
Among the new developments is a judgment by the European Court of Human Rights recognizing that Russian authorities unlawfully detained Krasnov and other protesters during a political demonstration. Krasnov is specifically named among the applicants in the ruling, drawing the attention of Russian authorities to his political activity.

In addition, Krasnov has publicly spoken to North American media about his opposition to Russia’s war in Ukraine and his criticism of the Putin government—statements that his attorneys say significantly increase the risk of retaliation if he is returned.
“Sending a known anti-war activist back to Russia under these circumstances places him in extraordinary danger,” said Wallie Mason, Krasnov’s attorney. “Mr. Krasnov has publicly opposed the Russian government and supported democratic opposition movements. Individuals like him are routinely targeted for detention, prosecution, and worse.”
Human rights organizations have documented widespread repression of political dissent in Russia in recent years. Opposition activists have faced imprisonment, harassment, and violence, and the Russian government has intensified its crackdown on critics of the war in Ukraine. Navalny, the country’s most prominent opposition leader, died in a Russian penal colony in 2024 after years of imprisonment.
Krasnov is currently detained at the Pine Prairie Immigration Detention Center in Louisiana. His legal team has filed an Application for Administrative Stay of Removal with ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in New Orleans, which has jurisdiction over the facility. That request remains pending.
Advocates and supporters are calling on elected officials, human rights organizations, and members of the public to urge U.S. authorities to halt Krasnov’s deportation while his case is under review.
“This case raises serious questions about whether the United States will return a political dissident to a government known for persecuting its critics,” Mason said. “We are asking the government to allow the legal process to run its course before taking an irreversible step.”
