Mason Immigration Featured in The Globe and Mail: Halting the Deportation of a Russian Dissident
Krasnov arrested for protesting in Moscow 2018
This week, the urgent case of our client, Russian anti-war activist Vladislav Krasnov, caught the attention of international media.
The Globe and Mail recently published a detailed feature on the 11th-hour legal battle our firm fought to secure an emergency Stay of Removal for Vladislav, keeping him safe from imminent deportation to the Russian Federation where he faced severe retaliation.
The article highlights the critical intervention by the United Nations Special Rapporteur and the tireless work of our lead attorney, Wallie Mason, to protect Vladislav’s human rights.
Here are a few key excerpts from the coverage detailing just how close this situation was:
"Wallie Mason, Mr. Krasnov's lawyer, told The Globe and Mail that her client's flight was about 90 minutes from departing Monday when the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) granted an emergency stay. She said Mr. Krasnov was shackled and waiting in a room with other men about to be taken on the plane. 'It was an extremely close call'."
The piece also highlighted the next steps in our legal fight, quoting Wallie Mason on the importance of the pending Motion to Reopen:
"She said that if the Board of Immigration Appeals grants the motion, they have a good chance of winning because it would take into consideration new evidence. The previous hearing did not consider that the European Court of Human Rights issued a decision finding that his detention in Russia was unlawful and politically motivated."
While this stay of removal is a massive victory, the fight for Vladislav's freedom is far from over. We are now fighting to have his case reopened so that newly issued rulings from the European Court of Human Rights can be properly reviewed.
