Jailed Russian Dissident Faces Rapid Health Deterioration Due to Medical Neglect

As Hunger Strikes Spread Across U.S. Detention Centers, Detained Russian Dissident Suffers Severe Health Decline; Attorneys Call for Immediate Intervention

LOS ANGELES, CA – Amidst a growing national crisis of hunger strikes and protests over squalid conditions and medical neglect at ICE detention facilities across the United States — including Adelanto in California and facilities in New Jersey — attorneys for Russian political dissident Vladislav Krasnov are sounding the alarm. Krasnov, 27, is currently suffering severe health deterioration in ICE custody, highlighting the deadly reality of the systemic failures within the U.S. immigration detention system.

Krasnov, a known critic of the Putin regime and former volunteer for Alexei Navalny’s anti-corruption league, recently secured a last-minute emergency Stay of Removal from the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), halting his imminent deportation to Russia. However, while he fights his legal case in the U.S., his physical survival in detention is now at grave risk.

A Systemic Failure of Care Krasnov suffers from an autoimmune disease and is a lifelong vegetarian for religious reasons. The detention facility has refused to accommodate his medical and religious dietary needs, categorizing his vegetarianism as a mere "lifestyle choice."

Consequently, Krasnov has been forced to survive almost entirely on simple carbohydrates and sweets. This severe nutritional deprivation, combined with the stress of his confinement and existing autoimmune condition, has pushed the 27-year-old into a state of pre-diabetes. His physical decline is rapid and documented.

“What we are seeing with Vladislav is not an isolated incident; it is a symptom of a systemic collapse in care,” said Wallie Mason, lead attorney for Krasnov. “People are dying in these facilities due to a lack of basic medical attention. We are witnessing a slow, bureaucratic execution by neglect. Vladislav fled Russia to escape political persecution and torture, only to find his health actively destroyed by the very system he asked for asylum.”

A History of Abuse in Custody Krasnov’s current health crisis follows a harrowing transfer process. Before the BIA intervened, he was held in sub-standard conditions in Arizona and Louisiana, where he was subjected to excessive and punitive shackling. The severe shackling and physical toll he endured during his transfers have laid the groundwork for his current deteriorating condition.

The Mason Immigration Law Office is actively arguing these severe conditions and rights violations in a new legal brief currently being prepared.

Call to Action for Media and Oversight As journalists and human rights organizations increasingly shine a light on the hunger strikes at Adelanto, New Jersey, and beyond, we urge the media to investigate the systemic medical neglect weaponized against detainees like Vladislav Krasnov.

"The cruelty is the point, and it must be exposed," Mason added. "We call on journalists, congressional oversight committees, and the public to look inside these facilities. Vladislav’s body is failing because the system is designed to break him. We need transparency and immediate medical intervention before another life is lost."

The Mason Immigration Law Office continues to fight for Vladislav's safe release from detention and for his asylum case to be fully reopened based on new evidence from the European Court of Human Rights.
